The City of Alpharetta continued its 2008 Sesquicentennial celebration with the unveiling of an all new Alpharetta History Walk through historic downtown Alpharetta. The unveiling began outside Alpharetta City Hall (2 South Main Street), the first site marked for the Alpharetta History Walk and the former location of the old Milton County Courthouse constructed in the late 1850s when Alpharetta was the county seat.
The unveiling continued on a narrated visit of 15 other buildings, homes and notable sites located on several blocks in the Historic Downtown area. Members of the public were invited to join Mayor Arthur Letchas and other City of Alpharetta officials at the event.
The Alpharetta History Walk features a total of 16 officially marked sites within walking distance of City Hall. Encompasses the city's downtown historic area, the walk begins at South Main Street. It continues onto North Main Street, then to Cumming St and back down North Main St. Finally it's onto Milton Avenue, Roswell St, Old Roswell St, and back to South Main Street.
The Alpharetta History Walk, includes downtown buildings, homes and sites of previous structures that were selected after extensive historical research because they represent a notable part of Alpharetta's history. The historic Queen Anne-style Mansell House (circa 1910) was also officially marked at 1835 Old Milton Parkway to celebrate Alpharetta's Sesquicentennial, and was added to the Alpharetta History Walk.
Each of the historic sites included in the Alpharetta History Walk will be marked with either standing or mounted outdoor historical markers. The numbered markers are fabricated of cast steel and flat steel and are painted wrought iron black.
"The Alpharetta History Walk is an important addition to preserving Alpharetta's rich 150-year history," said City of Alpharetta Mayor Arthur Letchas. The project will provide future generations with a glimpse into our city's past and we are proud to mark these historic sites for all to enjoy.
