| About the Market | ||
| First opened in 1958 and covering about 150 acres, the Atlanta State Farmers Market is one of the largest markets of its kind in the country. It is owned and operated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and works as both a wholesale hub, where produce haulers and truckers move goods around the clock, and a retail market open to the public, with produce sheds, a garden center and specialty shops spread across the property. | ||
| Produce | ||
| You can find nearly any seasonal fruit or vegetable here, from tomatoes, corn, okra and peppers to melons, peaches, blueberries and Georgia's own Vidalia onions in season, plus citrus and other produce trucked in from out of state. Selection shifts with the growing season and with what haulers bring in that day, so it is worth calling a specific vendor before you drive out if you need something in particular. | ||
| Meats & Seafood | ||
| Several vendors on the market grounds sell fresh and cured meats and seafood alongside their produce, plus general grocery staples. As with the produce sheds, individual vendor hours and stock vary day to day, so calling ahead saves a wasted trip if you are after something specific. | ||
| Garden Center & Plants | ||
| The market's garden center is a destination in its own right, with vendors selling bedding plants, shrubs, trees, hanging baskets and seasonal items like pumpkins in fall and Christmas trees in winter. It draws home gardeners and landscapers from across metro Atlanta. | ||
| Prepared & Specialty Foods | ||
| A handful of vendors sell prepared and specialty foods on-site, including baked goods and Southern staples like boiled peanuts. Offerings here turn over more than the produce sheds do, so what is available on any given visit can vary. | ||
| Operating Hours & Seasons | ||
| The market grounds are open around the clock for truck deliveries, and most retail vendors keep hours from about 8 am to 5 pm, seven days a week, all year. The gatehouse is staffed Monday through Friday, 10 am to 6 pm, and the Georgia Department of Agriculture administration office is open Monday through Friday, 7 am to 3 pm. | ||
