Hall County is currently developing a new park a few miles east of Flowery Branch, Georgia. 100 acres of prime property sits high above surrounding land with magnificent distant views from the grassy top of this spectacular property. This property has a natural outcropping of native granite sometimes referred to by local residents as "Stone Mountain's Toenails". |
|
This granite feature comes to the surface in a tree covered area providing impressive overhangs of stone along the ridge of this bluff called "Cherokee Bluffs". In addition, there is a 3 acre lake on the property in a low lying wooded area on the west side of the property. The natural beauty of this location will soon accommodate local visitors with a variety of planned activities.
The granite overhangs along the ridge is by far this parks most spectacular natural feature. The high stone walls this forms along the ridge is currently hidden in the woodland area and is not evident when you first step foot on the property. We were provided an advance look at this area by the men currently developing this property for the county.
Proposed amenities
Currently, these plans include a Disk Golf Course within the park. It will also have winding trails throughout the woodlands for hiking, an amphitheater, nature center, dog park, archery range, and horse riding trails. Tables for picnics along with play areas for children are also included in the plans. The 3 acre lake will be developed and stocked with fish for anglers to enjoy too. |

Cherokee Folklore
As with any cool natural feature, there is a story that goes along with the name of the park, "Cherokee Bluffs". Many years ago, this area was inhabited by the Cherokee Indians before the first European settlers moved into this area. A family of Cherokee Indians were being chased by a larger number of braves from another band invading this area. Because the Cherokee leader's family was included by his wife and children and were outnumbered, the chase went on for several hours and the family grew weary and unable to travel any further.
The leader of this Cherokee family decided to hide them in the low lying thick forest as he lead the outside war party away. Standing on the ridge where he was seen by this war party, he yelled and ran through the woods in the opposite direction with the other war party in close pursuit. After a valiant fight that used up this Brave's arrows, the war party finally surrounded him on the top of this granite bluffs. Rather than be taken prisoner by the war party closing in on him, this Brave cast himself off the high granite cliff to perish on the jagged granite rocks below.
Once the outside war party left the area, his family and friends searched and found his body upon the rocks below the cliffs. When they reached him, one of the children noticed a likeness of his face on the cliff in the stone. To this day, as you walk along this outcropping, you too can see the face of this Cherokee Brave in the side of the cliff he threw himself off to save his family and friends. Some folks say he is smiling at saving his family from certain death at the hands of the outsiders. |
