Administration Building - Spalding County Parks and Recreation Administration office is located within the City limits of Griffin on Memorial Drive in close proximity to Oak Hill and Memorial Cemetery and the Flint River Regional Library. Airport Road Playground and Fitness Area - Amenities: A 1/2 mile rubberized walking trail and a large play structure designed for children ages 2 to 12. The park offers a handicap accessible playground, fitness stretching stations, picnic tables and benches. Children especially enjoy climbing on the free standing dinosaurs! The holiday season is kicked off each year with the Festival of Lights holiday event here. The park is transformed into a winter wonderland with fun activities for children and Santa always makes an appearance just to see each child and hear their holiday wishes. Camp Stephens Camp Stephens was named for the Vice President of the confederacy Alexander H. Stephens. It is the site of a Civil War encampment and training ground. Nearly all Confederate troops from Georgia trained at this camp and at Calvary Camp Milner which is now the home of Griffin City Park. While visiting Camp Stephens one can still see the trenches and breastworks once used by the soldiers in training. This property is also located on the old trading route used by Chief McIntosh. City Park of Griffin - Amenities: The facility features a one court gymnasium and meeting rooms. The meeting rooms are available for reservations. Adjacent to the facility are 2 softball fields and The Grind Skate Park. Multiple classes are offered at the center as well as holiday and special events. Fairmont Park - Amenities: A picnic pavilion (can be rented), a large playground, outdoor basketball court, horseshoe pits and a softball field. This community center features a gymnasium plus meeting rooms and concessions. Multiple programs are enjoyed here including dance classes, after school programs, summer day camp and more. Each holiday season children enjoy the annual Breakfast with Santa! an outdoor basketball court, horseshoe pits and a softball field. University of Georgia Research and Education Garden is a 65-acre garden that offers a look at new approaches to environmental gardening. Open: Visitors may take a self guided tour of the garden on weekdays (except holidays) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (May through September). Moreland Road Neighborhood Park - Amenities: This park features a pavilion (non-rentable), a large playground and some nice grassy open areas. Orchard Hill Park - Amenities: 15 acres in size. Its amenities include 2 playgrounds, 2 walking trails, 1 practice baseball field, 2 picnic pavilions, and restrooms. This park also features a picnic pavilion and playground which is accessed from John Jones Jr. Road between Camp Road and Old Macon Highway. This is available for use on a first come basis. The City of Orchard Hill also offers a picnic area located under City Hall which seats approximately 40 people and has restroom access. Please call Wednesday afternoons only from 1 to 4pm to make your reservation. This park becomes a winter wonderland each holiday season with lighted holiday displays around the walk trail and a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. The Grind Skate Park - Amenities: Helmets are required to enter this street style skate park which features a 6 foot half pipe, several quarter pipes, bank to bank, multiple event fun box and various grinding rails. Also featured are numerous movable street objects such as tables, grinding boxes, jump ramps and more! There is no fee to skate. Open 7 am to 10 pm. Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park - Amenities:This beautiful regional park of 164 acres was named after Olympic Gold medalist Wyomia Tyus who is from Griffin/Spalding County. It has 2 large picnic pavilions overlooking a 3 acre lake with fountain, a 7 field soccer complex and a 5 field baseball complex. Each complex offers concessions and additional picnic and play areas. The baseball complex has the added bonus of batting and pitching cages. Fitness walking is one of the favorite activities in the community and this park offers rubberized and paved trails throughout the park as well has stretching and exercise areas.
