 The Georgia Guidestones no longer exist. In the early morning of July 6, 2022, an explosive device destroyed one of the granite monument's five slabs. Citing safety concerns over the unstable remaining structure, authorities demolished what was left later that same day. The person or people responsible have never been identified. While it stood, the monument carried a message comprising ten guides inscribed in eight modern languages, with a shorter message at the top in four ancient scripts: Babylonian, Classical Greek, Sanskrit, and Egyptian hieroglyphs. Nicknamed the "Stonehenge of America," the stones had been a baffling mystery from the start, since the identity of the person who commissioned them in 1980 was never revealed and remains unknown. One slab stood in the center, with four arranged around it, topped by a capstone, all astronomically aligned. A separate explanatory tablet set in the ground nearby also documented the monument's history and purpose. Today: the site in Elbert County is empty except for security cameras. A scale display model of the Guidestones, along with a short film about their construction, can still be seen at the Elberton Granite Museum in downtown Elberton. |
