| During World War II, American submarines sank more than half of Japan's merchant fleet and a large share of its warships, despite the "Silent Service" making up less than 2 percent of Navy personnel. More than 3,500 American submariners paid the ultimate price for that record, and today's submarine fleet is still considered one of the most cost-effective legs of the nation's strategic defense. Located in historic downtown St. Marys, the museum holds one of the largest private collections of submarine memorabilia in the country, started by collector Bernard Bastura in 1954 and acquired by the museum in 2003. Across nearly 5,000 square feet on two floors, exhibits cover submarine history from the Confederate H. L. Hunley through the modern nuclear fleet, and visitors can view the St. Marys waterfront through a working periscope. The museum is a non-profit organization. The museum occupies a city-owned building constructed in 1911 that is listed as a historic structure in its own right.
