The City of Savannah has a grand history as The Forest City. As early as 1891, trees were planted in an organized manner along streets and boulevards, and in parks and squares.
The Forest City in Savannah GA
In 1896, the Park & Tree Commission was established to assure the orderly forestation and beautification of the entire City. Strong support for urban forestry programs continues to this day.

While many other municipalities have struggled over recent years to maintain their resources for urban forestry, Savannah has increased its commitment and support for its urban forest programs significantly.

Since 1996, through increased funding levels, the urban forestry staff has grown from 18 to 25 personnel, along with additional equipment resources. There are currently five International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborists on staff.
Savannah Georgia is renowned for its remarkable urban forest and long standing commitment to its urban forest resource.Savannah has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA since 1985, and has also received Tree City USA Growth Awards eight times in the last nine years for advancements made in its urban forest programs. The Forestry Division was also honored in 2000 with the Outstanding Customer Service Award by the Georgia Urban Forest Council.

The trees are a major part of the character, charm, and beauty of Savannah, but the challenges facing its urban forest programs are similar to many other municipalities.

Over the past decade, population growth in Georgia has increased significantly, spurring both new development and urban renewal. This development and related infrastructure improvements are continual threats to the City's trees.

Fortunately, public awareness of the importance and value of urban trees has increased over the years, and along with this has come an increased commitment from community leaders to sustain a healthy urban forest. The City's annual tree planting and maintenance programs have become vital to sustaining and enhancing Savannah’s urban forest.
